Polymer Science I & II        (Accelerated Credit)                            Grades 10-12

Instructor: Joel Myrick                                                                           2 Credits

Year I Enrollment Requirements:   A student must:

  • complete a Career Tech Center application.
  • meet NWEA MAP scores:
    • in Reading – 5th grade of 206 or higher RIT score.
    • in Math – 5th grade of 211 or higher RIT score.
  • have good school attendance.
  • have a lack of discipline referrals.
  • complete prerequisite class, if applicable.
  • be approved by Career Tech Administration.

Polymer Science I is an instructional program that introduces students to the field of polymer materials manufacturing. The Polymer Science program is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences related to the application of polymer science concepts in the workplace. Students learn safety in the polymer industry, design of plastic parts using 3-D CAD software, use of computers in producing presentations, structures and properties of polymers, methods of polymer processing, and polymer recycling.

Year II CTC Enrollment Requirements:    A student must:

  • complete a Career Tech Center application.
  • not have a NC for Year I.
  • have a 70 final average or higher in Year I.
  • must score 55% or higher on Year I MS-CPAS2 test.
  • have good school attendance.
  • have a lack of discipline referrals.
  • be approved by Career Tech Administration.

Polymer Science II is a continuation of Polymer Science I and will focus on the synthesis of polymers, structure and properties of surface coatings, composite applications and processing, and the continued development of 21st century technical skills that are required in the workplace. Students who successfully complete the program will be better prepared to enter the workforce or continue their education at a two-year or four-year university. Students are expected to successfully complete Polymer Science II Performance Based Assessment (PBA).

Upon the successful completion of Polymer Science I and II, a student may receive 2 Carnegie Units of Science (other than Biology I), one of which can be Applied Chemistry, to satisfy the graduation requirement of 4 Sciences.
